      1. Workpiece characteristics

      Advantages: Reproducibility, can process complex workpieces, such as mobile phone molds, snow tire molds, etc. It has unique advantages for processing thin-walled workpieces, deep and narrow groove processing, and micro processing.

      Disadvantages: EDM has no advantage for workpieces that can be processed by conventional machine tools.

      2. Processing accuracy

      Advantages: No cutting force. Wire EDM is a process in which electrical energy is converted into heat. The distance between the machining electrode and the workpiece must be 0.02~0.3mm, so it is not affected by the cutting force and is used in thin-walled and fine-shaped cavities. The workpiece can achieve micron-level precision and high surface quality, and the surface quality can reach the mirror surface with Ra=0.1μm.

      Disadvantages: Due to the existence of the discharge gap, although high machining accuracy can be achieved, the machining is more difficult, and the electrode size and electrical parameters need to be adjusted multiple times, which greatly increases the cost.

      3. Processing materials

In recent years, there have been developments and applications in the processing of some micro-conductive and high-hardness materials, such as diamond processing and ceramic processing.

      Insufficiency: Unable to process non-conductive materials, such as plastic, rubber and nylon.

      4. Processing speed

      Advantages: It is more efficient and lower cost than high-speed milling to process complex and high-hardness workpieces. Processing small holes (φ 0.3~3mm) is more efficient and lower cost than other drilling.

      Disadvantages: Before EDM, rough milling is required to remove most of the material, especially during finishing. In order to achieve good surface quality, parameters such as machining current and pulse width must be reduced, which greatly reduces machining efficiency.
